Phaedo by Plato

Socrates talks a lot about the soul and body with death. The soul is mentioned as being a she, and when the soul leaves a body, most are scared of what happens to her. Death can be something that is scary, or viewed differently by everyone. About philosophy and death, Socrates views that there is something more after death. He believes that there is something good to come from any evil of the world and ones body. His view also is that philosophers desire death, and they do not fear it. And that is his view on philosophy and death.  I agree with Socrates on his view because I think that there is so much more from the body that can be gained when not in it. He brings up that the body requires so much, like food for example, and when the body does not need to focus on that anymore, and the soul can be free, then maybe there can be good experienced. I myself am afraid of death, but I know that so much can come from my soul not being stuck in my body. if the mind can be freed from the b...

Reparations and Racial Inequality

Darby argues that in the short-term it may be preferable to argue for black reparations in a manner that does not depend on the particular causes of racial inequalities and suggests a possible way forward. Do you agree? Explain. Racial Inequality and reparations has been an issue for as long as I can remember in history class. I always remember hearing about slavery and just getting angry at what had happened. By paying for what had happened, it may seem to make up for what was wrong. But money does not fix everything, and many do not want to pay for what the costs would be.  Darby makes the argument that there needs to be a shift from the normal ways of correcting the wrongs, and moving more towards freedom as self-development. Allowing for African Americans freedom to be in a way of self-development, it does not take away from their slavery ancestors, and it also allows for them to stay in touch and not be discriminated against for their own development. During slavery times, the...

Environmental Degradation, Reparations, and the Moral SIgnificance of History

To what extent does Caney's argument about reparations regarding anthropogenic climate change apply to the issue of reparations for slavery?    In my opinion, I only see a small connection with how Caney's argument can apply to the reparations of slavery. With slavery, they were given many opportunities to live a better life, and most opportunities came from the expenses of the slave owners and mostly everyone in America at the time. Slaves were not expected to take part in the reparations because it was the whites who needed to fix what they had gotten wrong. So withCaney's article, I can see how the beneficiary account can be applied because this makes it so that the one's who benefitted from slavery, were also the same who paid for the reparations. To me, this is the main reason that I can understand of how Caney's argument can apply to the reparations of slavery. In conclusion, slavery reparations were paid by those who owned slaves, anyone who supported slavery...

Making Time: A study in the Epistemology of Measurement

When we look at time we have to take into account the seconds that go into it. The second is considered to be the "duration of exactly 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to a hyperfine transition of caesium-133 in the ground state." This in other words means that there is a frequency that is associated with caesium atoms being unifor, but this also has to do with just stating what the duration of a standard second is.  What standard clocks are meant to measure is known as coordinated universal time (UTC).  Standard clocks are made to "measure the frequencies associated with specific atomic transitions" Through many algorithms and time, scientists have been able to track these frequencies and find out information between the tick of the clock and what it means with UTC.

The Relativity of Simultaneity

The relativity of simultaneity has to do with timing and how observers perceive the timing of events. taking two people and making one move and the other stationary, the way that they will perceive an event in relation to time will be different because of how they believe that the events would need to happen in order for there to be an event occurring simultaneously. A stationary observer will perceive two light flashes at the same time if they are standing where the two lights are equidistant from them. This observer will conclude that the lights had to have happened at the same time in order for them to perceive the light signals at the same time. The observer in motion will believe that in order to perceive the light signals at the same time, then one will have to have happened earlier than the other to reach them at the same time. This is the relativity of simultaneity. What it is not though is the appearance of the event, but rather the perception of the event happening. What...

The Unreality of Time

Time is a concept which I have thought about before, but never what my view is. I conceived my idea of the nature of time from the beginning of learning about the sun. Based on humans using the sun to create a sense of time for their days, there has always been this idea of time, which is what I have used to form my idea of time. I believe that I may agree with McTaggart's view on time with his A series. I believe that no matter what the event is, there will be an event and it will occur in a past, present, or future order. I see a similarity among this because I tend to see an event in the present, and I never really look at events in the past or the future, but in context of the present time.  McTaggart's "unreality of time" relates to how he believes that the A and B series seem to work together in some cases, and if there is a B series, then there is an A series, but without being able to see distinctions among reality in concepts of time, then there is no time, a...

Global Climate Change and Protecting Future Generations

Do we have duties to protect future people from adverse effects of climate change? Why? Who is “we”? Identifying who is the problem of climate change is where people need to start. Previous generations have been the biggest influence on climate change so far. Can we change what has happened to the world? This answer to me is no, we can not change what has happened. Although, we can try to fix what has been ruined. There may be many who side with the idea that, since the previous generations never cared or tried to protect us who are living now, then why should we protect the future? Then we have the people who want to contribute to the world and try to right the wrong to make the world better for the future. I can agree with both sides, but living in the world now, I can see more and more people trying to help the world and stop climate change. It is the duty of this generation now to provide for the future and set them up for accomplishment. If "we" do not change anything, t...
